The National Elder Abuse Prevalence Study, published in 2021, revealed a deeply troubling truth: one in six older Australians experienced abuse in the past 12 months, yet 61 per cent of those affected didn’t seek help. This hidden crisis calls for urgent action.
Elder abuse isn’t just about physical harm – it can also take the form of psychological or emotional torment, sexual abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation.
For older people subject to such abuse, the shame and embarrassment can be overwhelming, trapping them in a cycle of silence and fear.
We know that elder abuse is complex and deeply personal, which is why the EAU’s approach combines the expertise of both lawyers and social workers to help address the legal and emotional aspects of this issue. This interdisciplinary approach allows us to provide the kind of support that truly makes a difference.
“Our approach always starts with a conversation.
We take the time to understand each person’s story, to hear what they’ve experienced and the impact it’s had on their life.”
“We know that reaching out for help can be incredibly tough, so we ensure that every interaction is grounded in empathy and trust,” Nicole says.
“Ultimately, we’re here to help them move forward and provide a path toward safety.”
In the past year, the service has provided support to 252 people.
Each of these individuals is a reminder of why this work matters – because behind every statistic is a person, a story, a life that deserves to be lived with dignity.
One of these clients is June* – an older woman who says the support she received has changed her life for the better.
“I was ‘broken’ after my son’s abuse. I felt I was to blame and a failure as a mother,” June says.
“I was constantly living in fear, feeling hopeless and I didn’t know how to move on... I don’t know where I’d be without the help and counselling I received.”
“I’ve come a long way and I’m slowly getting my life back.
I am very grateful to Uniting Communities for making this possible.”
As June’s story shows, the services provided by the EAU are as diverse as the needs of the people we serve.
Confidential support includes assessments for those who may be experiencing elder abuse, legal advice and representation, education to empower people with the information they need to protect themselves, ongoing support through case management, counselling, support groups, and referrals to connect people with further support where needed.
Uniting Communities is dedicated to promoting the rights and safety of older people.
We believe that every person deserves to age with dignity and respect, free from fear or harm.
Together, we can ensure that older people live with the respect, safety, and care they deserve.
If you or someone you know may be experiencing elder abuse, please reach out. Our team is ready to listen:
