Now, the 94-year-old’s extraordinary efforts have been recognised in a fitting tribute, with the City of Charles Sturt naming a local reserve in her honour.
Eileen was one of the original residents who championed the development of the reserve more than 20 years ago, giving locals a safe space to come together and enjoy nature. Nestled between William Street and Cedar Avenue, the newly named Eileen Harris Reserve now stands as a vibrant testament to her decades of dedication.
Since the Reserve was opened in 2002, Eileen has watched over the park, collected rubbish, and acted as a volunteer caretaker.
"I’m incredibly humbled and proud to have my name on the Reserve. It’s a privilege to know that all these years of caring for the space mean it will now be remembered in my name."
Eileen’s impact on her community extends far beyond the reserve, from generously sharing information on the rich history of West Croydon to establishing the community’s Christmas in the Park celebration.
The yearly tradition has become a cornerstone of local life, helping to foster a close-knit community, where locals look out for each other and know one another by name.
As Eileen continues to enjoy life in the neighbourhood she has always loved, our Community Aged Care team is proud to support her, ensuring she can remain in the home she has treasured since the 1950s.
Eileen’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact one person can have on a community.
It’s also a testament to the difference that services like our Community Aged Care program can make in the lives of older people, helping them to live independently, with dignity and choice.
